ragnar chicago (part 2)

After my first leg, we stopped and got some food, and then headed to the next major exchange.  I took a boot camp-style shower (aka - no stalls or curtains), and decided to sleep outside in my sleeping bag so that I would actually sleep.  I passed out under the stars, cuddled with @OrtonPants and warm in the bf's camo sleeping bag.

I woke up to my phone beeping low battery, and this text from David:
"My goal is to beat my own van so be ready."

My brain went "OH SHIT!" and I quickly packed up my stuff and headed back to the van.  We went to the exchange to wait for David, who finished his 3 miles in 16 minutes, and did indeed beat the van.  He is insanely fast.  Color me impressed.

Again, I didn't have to run for a million years.  The lack of sleep caught up with everyone, and we were acting silly.  EVERYTHING is funny at 3am.  Oh, then there was that part when we thought we were at the wrong exchange.  That was fun.

All of these exchanges were in different places than they were last year (my guess is they sold out for bigger parking lots).  My exchange was at an elementary school in Racine, in the middle of a pitch-black field.  I had to use my headlamp to use the smelly poo house AND get to the exchange.

Then Renee came sprinting in, and away I went!

Leg #2:
This one took me through a residential area of Racine - complete with sidewalks and streetlights.  I didn't even need to hit the light on my Garmin, I would just wait for the next streetlight before checking it.  I must say, I have lucked out with all of my night legs during Ragnar.  Aka NO TRAILS.  I would probably poop my pants if an animal came out in front of me on the trail.

After winding through the subdivisions, I got to hop onto a lakefront trail!  With downhills and everything!  Weeeeee!

Then I went up a hill and across a bridge!  I LOVE BRIDGES!  WIN!

All of a sudden, I turned another corner and was almost at the finish.  I was FLYING to the exchange.  I saw Laura and handed off.  I caught my breath for a second, then handed my ipod and Garmin off to Kelsey, because FINALLY I took care of my stomach gremlin.  TMI: It was AMAZING.

Distance:  4.72 mi
Time:  38:39 min
Average Pace:  8:12
Kills:  4

We decided to get a couple of hours sleep at this exchange.  I passed on the shower, took a Polish shower with baby wipes, then passed out in my sleeping bag.

Next up - Ragnar pickup lines and EPIC fail in leg 3.

  1. AMAZING leg!

I have to laugh at the everything is funny at 3AM part and when you thought you were at the wrong exchange. LOL! So true! Nesa was freaking out over not being able to find her reflective vest at exchange 18: It was hanging right THERE! WHO took it? WHY can't I find it??? And yes, she was wearing it the entire time. ;-)
