march in review

Miles run:  102.18

Miles biked:  Big fat 0.  (I'm thinking that goal may be out of reach.  Whenever I think seriously about biking again, I get sick.  Weird.)

Races run: 3

PRs at said races: 2

Medals earned: 2

New thing done: Running with a group!

Book read: Meb's book, Run to Overcome.  (Link and review coming soon!)

Biggest achievement:  Breaking 1:45 in the pikermi.  It was my goal for all of 2012, and to do it at the beginning of March was nothing short of amazing.

Biggest disappointment:  Ending Hal's maintenance program.  Man, I LOVED it!  Can't wait until next winter!  (Did I really just say that?!)

Things I'm loving this month:  Seeing summer beers stocked on the shelves of my liquor store, wearing shorts and tanks because it's so hot out, crossing off 2 states, Nuun, Redbox, the return of Mad Men, traveling to new places with great friends, HUNGER GAMES!!!, having a big group of people to hang out with after the Shamrock Shuffle... and the Sunday Funday that followed :)

Things I'm hating on:  All things Tim Tebow, the predictions of the worst allergy season in a century, Matt Forte taking to Twitter to whine like a spoiled child, the Duncan Keith 5-game suspension, baseball beginning its season with 2 crappy teams nobody cares about in Japan (newsflash, Bud Selig: baseball is ALREADY POPULAR IN JAPAN!)

Things (races) to look forward to in April: Egg Shell Shuffle Pikermi, Crossroads of Indiana Pikermi, CARA Lakefront 10 Miler

Where are we on the shoes?

3 things thursday

1.  I'm a little under the weather this week.  I didn't run yesterday, since I came home sick from work and spent the majority of the day sleeping.  I still didn't feel good today, but went out and ran 3.5 miles anyway.  The entire time I was running, I felt TERRIBLE.  But ever since I came home, showered, and laid down for awhile, I feel better.  Go figure.

So my end of the month and book reviews might be a little late.  Hopefully I'll have enough time to catch up on the weekend, since I'm not racing.

2.  Season 4 of The Office is so underrated.  Those episodes are running in reruns on our local channel, and I've tuned in every single day.  The Dinner Party episode is one of the best EVER.  (My favorite part is at the end when Andy licks Angela's ice cream cone, and she rolls down the window and smacks it against the car.)

3.  I had to pull out the running tights today.  It's COLD out there!  43 degrees, but feels like 37.  YUCK!  We've been so spoiled this month.

Related: I thought March was supposed to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb, not vice versa.

shamrock shuffle 8K RR

Oh how I love the Shuffle...

It's the unofficial start of running season in Chicago, and one of the best races ever.  Basically, you run the 8K, and then drink beer in the park and listen to good local cover bands all day.  What's not to like about that?!

*SPOILER ALERT*  In case you are just skimming, I PRd.  By 2 minutes.  I kicked the hell out of the race.

For the first time ever, the race started in 2 waves.  I was in the first wave with Renee, and all of our other friends were in the 2nd wave.  So we got down there early and headed to the start right away.  Since we had to be in our corrals a full 15 minutes before the start of the race, I barely had enough time to check my bag before we had to head in.  I did not have enough time to pee.  This *might* be why I ran so fast.  But I digress...

Really terrible picture of me and Renee in the start corral (I swear, the lighting wasn't THAT bad!):
Banners lining the street that the corrals were on... (I stole this picture from my awesome cousin Jill).

After the national anthem by the wonderful Wayne Messmer, we were OFF!

Mile 1:  I never know how to pace in an 8K... is it closer to 5K pace, or 10K?  I decided 5K, since I am awful at 10Ks.  Plus, I ran so many 5Ks last year, that I am somewhat of an expert.

The course starts the same way that the Chicago Marathon does - actually, the first couple of miles, plus the finish, are exactly the same. Right on the first bridge, I spot Kirk and Lindsay on the other side, and say hi.  Then, even though I told Renee that I wasn't going to PR today, I take off, because my legs have loosened up and I feel fantastic now.  7:28

Mile 2:  I see a smelly poo house, and I desperately want to stop.  But that is lame.  I've been running for 7.5 minutes, and if I play my cards right, I'll be back to the finish in another 30.  I don't need a pit stop.

I love all the screaming people and costumes I'm seeing on the course.  Yes, we're in the faster portion of the race, so people are competing, but it feels like not everybody takes this one seriously.  It's just FUN.  That's what I love about this.  Fastest mile of the day.  7:15

Mile 3:  My elbows are sweating something fierce.  For real, a long-sleeved shirt may have been a bad idea.  I was so cold at the start, but am now red, dripping, and gross.  I roll up my sleeves and count blocks until the turn.  I hit 3 miles in 22 minutes FLAT!  Whoa!  I am FLYING!  7:16

Mile 4:  There's a timing mat at the 5K split, and as it turns out, I run my 2nd best 5K time EVER.  Like, EVER.  I can't believe this.  Why doesn't this happen in an actual 5K?!  This just motivates me to run one sometime soon, while I still am in this amazing groove.  I decide to slow this mile down a bit, so that I can rock out the last part.  I find the mile split and start flying towards the finish.  7:29

Mile 4.96:  Running down the Mag Mile, right next to the park, is SO AWESOME.  It's turning into a gorgeous day, and I'm so incredibly happy to be running in this race.  Turn onto the Roosevelt Rd bridge, and head to the finish.  From doing the marathon so many times, I know when there's about a quarter mile to go, pick up my feet, and kick the hell out of the last part of the race.  It makes me wish there was another .04 mi to see what my mile split would have been!  I think it would have been a 2012 best!  7:01

FINAL TIME:  36:31
AVERAGE PACE:  7:21
LESSON LEARNED:  I still don't know how to dress myself for the weather.  I need to work on this.
NEXT 8K:  Bastille Day 8K, 7.12.2012... although if anybody knows of one sooner, let me know!  I love 8Ks!

After the race, I met Renee at gear check, and then we headed to the beer tent.  We picked out a spot by Buckingham Fountain (right near a guy in a green mohawk wig), and spent the time waiting for Jill, Kari, and Kim to finish people watching and enjoying the amazing weather.

Kim took this amazing photo of the skyline after the race.
So 3 beers later, everyone joined us and we chatted about the race.  Then we decided to continue on with Sunday Funday, and went to O'Donovan's for mimosas and brunch.  Best brunch ever, due to the dinosaur chicken nuggets!  I think I ate like 10 of them, LOL.

Kari, Renee, Me, & Jill before the race
I LOVE THE SHUFFLE!!!

3 things thursday

1. Post race picture from RnR USA, courtesy of my new friend Amelia:

2. I've listened to over 1300 songs on my ipod. I never thought I would make it this far, to be honest. Usually when I delude myself into thinking that it's possible, I only make it 200 songs or so. Now that I will hit halfway sometime tomorrow, I'm not giving up. I'm going to listen to every single song on that thing, even if it kills me. Then I will allow myself to buy the Hunger Games soundtrack and the new song by Carrie Underwood. (I made a list.)

3. Sunday is the Shamrock Shuffle 8K! Omg I am SO excited! My cousin, and Kari, and Renee, and my friend Kim, and just about everyone else I know is going to be there. I'm bringing my camera... and buying extra beer tickets... and wearing all green! I CAN'T WAIT!

(Goal for Sunday... sub-38 minutes... which I *think* is possible. No Garmin again, I'm on a good streak without it!)

rock n roll USA half marathon RR

I can't believe I didn't blog about registering for this race before! I searched and searched, but no go.

So here goes... because this was an "inaugural" event, RnR had a contest to promote the race. The rules were simple: if you were the first person from your state to register for the race, your entry was free. So I stayed up late on a Sunday (True Blood was on, so it's not like I didn't have anything to do), THANKFULLY my active.com account filled in all the blanks, and I got my entry for free!

Ladies and gentlemen, I am the REAL Miss Illinois :)

I flew into DC (well, Arlington VA) after work on Thursday. I was staying with a friend of a friend, and actually flew out with one of my running friends from Illinois. Since we both got in so late, we just headed back to our friend's house (yes, she is now my friend too) and cashed out for the night.

The next day we headed into DC when Renee's friend had to work. Then we met up with our friend Kelsey, who was in town on an overnight (she's a flight attendant), and headed to the expo. There was a surprising amount of food at the expo, and I pretty much ate everything. And bought some stars and stripes socks with the race logo on them :) Then we went to Maryland for some lunch and some Georgetown Cupcakes. The cupcakes are as amazing as advertised. For real.

Then it was time for some basketball (yay Spartans!), some dinner, and some sleep, since we had an early wake-up call and a loooong Metro ride to RFK Stadium on Saturday morning.

So we got up... I was actually up before my alarm. I am lame. Got dressed, but something wasn't sitting too well in my stomach, and all I have to say about that Metro ride is that everyone around me should be grateful that I did not puke everywhere. Also, I forgot to bring my ipod, so this was going to be a loooong race. :(

Pre-race awesomeness:

I didn't go into the start corral right away, as I had 12 minutes to go and I figured it would be plenty of time to use the bathroom before the start. (It was. Plenty of time.)

After the national anthem, we were OFF!

Mile 1: I know there are hills in this race. Everyone I've talked to, all they reminded me of was the hills. So I will start off a little more conservatively than I normally would, and save some gas for the hills. 8:13

Mile 2: Oops. 7:53

Mile 3: I really don't feel good. My stomach is still acting weird. When I was standing in the start corral waiting to go, I changed my goal from "finish with a smile on your face" to "don't poop your pants." If you only understood how huge of an accomplishment this would be. 8:03

Mile 4: I vaguely remember someone rapping on a street corner, but I don't know what mile that was, or even what he was saying. Just that it sounded like gibberish. And I don't think he was one of the official course bands. Odd.

I'm running alongside the National Mall... I must admit, I'm staring HARD at the Washington Monument, trying to see if there is a crack in the top from the earthquake. And then I start to think, do buildings crack from earthquakes at the top or at the bottom? 8:12

Mile 5: Weird 180 degree turn. But there is a cute little band playing patriotic songs. THIS I can get behind! And lucky me, they are not taking a break! 8:13

Mile 6: Oh crap, here's the DuPont Hill everyone has been talking about.

On the path where Renee runs, there is a hill known as Vomit Hill. I feel like this hill should be called Vomit Hill. There IS entertainment during this mile, aka a guy in an Incredibles costume with a boombox. People are awesome. 8:17

Mile 7: I know that today isn't going to be a PR (hills, vomity feeling, etc), but I am still a little disheartened when the 1:45 pace group passes me by. I won't be TOO far behind them, but still. Once you do what I did to a course in New Orleans, it's hard to adjust to the way things used to be. Slowest mile of the day, guess I was thinkin' too much. 8:20

Mile 8: Ok, I've had enough of these hills. I thought there was only a big one over by DuPont Circle, and then the rest was downhill. Not so. There's more UP. But I want to go DOWN. NO MORE UP! 8:12

Mile 9: Now we're over near Howard University, and it's flattened out a bit. I introduce myself to a fellow Maniac on the course (who was kinda snotty, to be honest), and the zoom zoom away because I'm embarrassed that I told him my name? I don't know. The whole thing was weird. Someone from the Midwest probably would have hugged me and given me their phone number. I'm not used to anything less hospitable, I guess. 8:07

Mile 10: Sweet little downhill with a gorgeous view of the Capitol ahead of me. The bigger it gets, the closer I am to being done! (And I am ready to be done!) I see a girl wearing the same shorts as me. I have started to salt. The sun is beating on me a little bit, and it's so much warmer than I expected it to be.

I guess I shouldn't be complaining about the weather - this weekend last year, it was high 30s, pouring rain, and I nearly got struck by lightning. And I ran on hills that weekend too. No more complaining! 8:02

Mile 11: I FINALLY feel better. Seriously. It only took over 10 freaking miles. But my stomach has settled nicely. Even though I would kill for an ice cold Gatorade, overall I feel good. I spot a different Maniac cheering on the median, and I high-five him. HE is nice. Must be from the Midwest ;) 8:03

Mile 12: I'm absolutely flying. Then we turn the corner, and I have to go UP. Fuuuuuck. NO MORE UP! 8:15

Mile 13: Sweet little downhill from here to the finish. My left IT band is acting weird - sometimes it falls asleep when I run fast, like now. I literally start to pick up my leg and make the running motion, and it gets the drift and starts to work properly again. Also in this mile, I finally see a photographer, and come away with some sweet shots. Fastest mile of the day. 7:43

PHOTO BOMB!

Mile 13.1: At this point, I am just focused on obtaining my 2nd best time ever, which I do with ease.

Me, trying to do math:

Not gonna lie - I knew I was going to go under 1:47 for sure, so I phoned it in a little bit. My legs were a little wobbly after their hilly adventure, and I didn't want to hurt myself. The Shamrock Shuffle is way more important to me than this one. 0:51

FINAL TIME: 1:46:30
AVERAGE PACE: 8:07
LESSON LEARNED: RnR no longer has Gatorade at all water stations! May need to figure out a different hydration solution for RnR Chicago, seeing as how it's in July and all.
NEXT PIKERMI: Egg Shell Shuffle, 4.7.2012

I had a lot of fun in DC - I drank some new, interesting beer. I made some new friends. I ran my 2nd best time ever (on HILLS). I got a sweet new medal, and should have a Heavy Medal heading my way in a few weeks. Life is good.
