keep the half madness great!

I was going to write about something else today, but then I got this in my email -

I have run this race twice, in 2011 and 2012.

Some things I liked best about this race -

  • The winding roads,
  • Ample amounts of beautiful trees (which means SHADE),
  • Downhills and uphills (you know, because sometimes going flat all the time is boring),
  • The residents who sit in lawn chairs in their driveways and cheer for runners.
I would also like to point out that there are other races held pretty much entirely on the Fox River Trail (ahem, Fox Valley races).  Why would I do both, which was my original plan for the year, when the course is basically the same?  I'd probably pick only 1 of the races to do.

I actually don't mind the hills that come with the roads - it makes the course way more interesting than it would otherwise be.

As previously stated - running a race entirely on a bike path is BORING.  And usually CROWDED.

And let's be clear - I'm not one who is opposed to change.  But the thing I love most about this race is the amount of people who come out of their houses and sit in their driveways or stand on the roads to cheer for the runners.  It's a small-town race.  Please don't take that away from us.

  1. I guess I have never "experienced Batavia." Also, I did not realize that Batavia had many sides. Who knew? Now I will likely never have these great experiences if they move it to the trail only. Bummer.

    1. You'd still get to see the windmill, but for sure the race would be losing something.

  2. The City events admin just doesn't want to deal with traffic. Keeping it on trails makes his job easier. This is a terrific race as is, and my favorite 13.1 course. If they change the course, I won't run it again.

    1. "Making his job easier" is not a good reason to change the course. I'm with you, if it changes, I'm out.
