I ran a 5K in Houston over the weekend. The guest starter was none other than Meb.
Fun fact: Meb was also staying in my hotel, and we saw him a few times over the weekend. I was way too shy to ask him for a picture or autograph or anything.
So anyway, Meb gave a lovely speech where he talked about how proud he was to represent the US in the London Olympics, and how much he loved the support from the people in Houston during the trials in 2012.
The best thing Meb said? He said that every time he runs a race, he runs to win. And winning is different for everybody. Winning for you might not necessarily mean coming in first. But always run to win.
This is going to stick with me forever, I just know it. As if I wasn't already, I am now certainly a Meb fan for LIFE.
I completely understand why you wouldn't approach Meb in Houston. Joan Benoit ate breakfast at the table next to mine last year, and I did not want to invade her privacy. Although I probably did stare a few times! I will be running with Meb at a marathon in April. Well, at least we will be in the same race!
