In case you didn't know, I'm in a running club. Not just any running club, mind you, but the WURST Running Club Ever. It's a group of bloggers here in Chicago. The club was formed at one of Fleet Feet's monthly Pint Nights. We like beer. And making sausage jokes.
This race was the first officially unofficial WRCE "race." We all had matching t-shirts and everything! You might remember that I did this race last year.
Pre-race: At the last minute, I decided to take the Metra instead of driving. (When you become suburban, driving downtown seems like such a hassle.) And I lucked out, because I paid $0 to ride the Metra round-trip... and they wonder why they are losing money.
Anyhow... once my train got into Clybourn, I rolled up my gear bag and palmed it. So that I could run 2+ miles to the zoo. (Hey, I had 7 on the schedule!) It was so uneventful for a city run. I ran into Erin when I first got to the zoo, and then I ran through the zoo a bit to finish my miles before heading to the race site.
I met up with everyone, changed into my awesome WRCE shirt, and then was ready to run!
(I knew going into it that this was not going to be the best day. The race has grown tremendously since its inception, and was really crowded. Also, it was really humid outside. And we all know what my body does in the heat/humidity.)
All photos were snagged from Pete, Mr Erin, and the race's Facebook page.
|Clearly, we are having a "meat" up.|

Mile 3: I was ready to be done. This was the part of the race where I questioned how I ran the way I did in Philly. Then I remembered, weather. Right. I need to live somewhere with a more temperate climate, that's for sure.

|This one too! Why are you not a race photog???|
Just when I thought my lungs were going to explode and my legs were going to fall off, I spotted Declan on the side of the course, handing out high fives. I hope he appreciated that I wiped off my hand before I slapped his! 8:12
Mile 3.14: This whole entire race, I felt like I had no second gear - like I wanted to go faster, but I just couldn't flip the switch. It was frustrating, but since all of my goals lately are to enjoy running again, I didn't really care at all. Another race in the books, and when I heard someone (Pete) yelling "Mo-bot! Do the Mo-bot!" at the end, of course I obliged. I finished the race all smiles, and ready for beer! 1:02
FINAL TIME: 24:56
AVERAGE PACE: 7:57
2013 5K / OVERALL 5K: 12 / 67
MEDAL / FINISHER AWARDS?: Blue plastic beer mugs. Well, okay.
RACE SHIRT COLOR: Blue
NEXT RACE: Four Stars Trail Run, 9.21.2013
Post-race: I was dying for some water, so I got a bottle, and then ate a packet of cookies so fast, you'd think I had never seen food before. We waited for everyone else to finish, and then headed to the post-race party - Sam Adams Oktoberfest *and* free nachos and mac n cheese. We talked about running and racing, and it was so much fun. Can't wait for the next WRCE event!
